Go behind the scenes on International Museum Day

International Museum Day is celebrated worldwide on 18 May. Join the National Museum’s scientist on a behind the scenes tour of our collections. Enjoy popular lectures on fossils and archaeology.

We are using the occasion to raise awareness on how important museums are in the development of society and culture. The theme set for 2019 is “Museums as Cultural Hubs: The future of tradition.” The role of museums in society is changing. Museums keep reinventing themselves in their quest for becoming more interactive, audience focused, community oriented, flexible, adaptable and mobile. They have become cultural hubs functioning as platforms where creativity combines with knowledge. ..And where visitors can also co-create, share and interact.

Visitors will be able to go behind the scenes and explore the archaeology, arachnology, rock art, history and anthropology collections. This followed by popular lectures by Dr Jennifer Botho Brink (Museum Palaeontologist) and Dr Lloyd Roussouw (Museum Archaeologist).

Entrance to the Behind the Scenes event is FREE OF CHARGE but booking is essential so please call us on 051 447 9609 to secure your spot.
Light refreshments will be served
